Our hockey days. By Dave Harland.

In the early days of our married lives, both Peter and I lived in Ascot and played hockey for Staines-not always in the same teams. On this particular occasion in the early 70's we were playing away at Chalfont and we convinced our respectives that this was a very long journey and we must set out at12 0'clockfor a 2.30 bully off. Arriving in Chalfont just before 12.30 we decided to prepare for the game in the accepted manner in those days and have a drink before the match. It must have been near the end of the season because it was a springlike day with the sun shining-the pub was quite busy, the clientele being mostly farming stock with their wellies and dogs creating a very pleasant atmosphere. As I recall the beer was exceptionally good and of course one pint was not enough....nor was two...and we were not too concerned as we didn't have far to go. At 2.20 and after 6 pints we left the pub as we knew the ground was just up the road. It turned out that we didn't and it wasn't and after much driving around we arrived at our games just in time for the half time oranges! It was a measure of how good we were or how desperate Staines were that neither of us was dropped the following week! So, my old friend, you are now playing on the great hockey pitch in the sky. I am sorry I did not get to see you but the way things are going I shall be joining you soon, assuming I am going to the same place! Just remember if you are playing Chalfont away, go straight to the game as you do not want to upset the boss.
